Kashaya Oral History Project

Our project will gather stories of or about the history of the
Kashaya Pomo Indian community, a federally recognized
tribe who reside today at the Stewarts Point Rancheria in
northern Sonoma county in California.

The purpose of this project is to interview Kashaya Pomo
elders and tribal scholars from the Stewarts point Rancheria
and collect stories about their families'experiences and
interactons with Russian, Mexican, and Anglo-American
colonists over the last two centuries.

The project is a collaborative effort of the Kashaya Pomo
tribe, the University of California at Berkeley, California State
Parks, and the Cultural Conservancy.
The project is funded by the
California Council of the Humanities.

The Cultural Conservancy (TCC) has worked with the Kashaya band of Pomo Indians at Stewarts Point Rancheria through our past consultant and now board member Otis Parrish. Otis currently serves as the Vice-Chair fro the Kashaya Pomo Tribe. With Otis, TCC has hosted tribal members and children from the Kashaya Pomo Reservation at the Presidio National Park for tours of the park that emphasize California Indian History. We continue to work with the Kashaya community through mutual interests in the conservation and restoration of California Indian lands and cultural traditions
